Most surge planning assumes one busy season. Texas gets three, and they behave nothing alike. A plan built for hail will not survive a freeze, and neither helps you in September on the Gulf coast.

Here is each one, and the marketing preset to build before it arrives.

Surge one: the hard freeze

Shape: Statewide, overnight, near-vertical onset, short duration.

Pipes burst between 2am and 6am. Heating systems fail through the night. Homeowners wake to water or to a house that will not warm, and they all search at once across every metro simultaneously.

What is different: every competitor in the state is drowning at the same moment. The homeowner who cannot reach you probably cannot reach anyone. The company that responds captures an unusually large share, which makes the marginal value of being available extraordinarily high for about seventy-two hours.

Build in January:

- Overnight response capability with no capacity ceiling

- Triage distinguishing active water from no-heat, and no-heat with a vulnerable occupant from no-heat generally

- Honest lead-time messaging. You cannot be same-day during a statewide freeze, and pretending otherwise costs you the callback

- A shutoff-instruction resource you can send instantly, which prevents damage and earns the job

- An elevated ad budget preset, activated when the forecast turns

The November campaign that pays for itself: a pre-freeze outreach to your existing customer base offering pipe insulation, outdoor faucet covers, and a heating check. It books work in a slow month and reduces the emergency volume that will otherwise overwhelm you.

Surge two: hail

Shape: Geographically concentrated, afternoon or evening onset, multi-week tail.

North Texas sits in one of the most active hail corridors in the country. A single storm across a DFW suburb produces an enormous, tightly clustered burst of roofing, siding, gutter, and window inquiries.

What is different: pure simultaneity from a small geography, followed by an insurance-driven second wave over the following weeks as homeowners get claim numbers and start collecting estimates.

Build in February:

- Simultaneous response capacity, which is the whole requirement

- A storm ad preset with tightened geographic targeting to the affected corridor and copy written for storm damage rather than routine service

- Insurance capture fields, claim number, carrier, adjuster contact, claim status

- A clear public position on what insurance work you do and do not handle

- Content explaining the claims process, which is what homeowners search for in the days after and which almost nobody has written well

The competitive read: hail markets attract storm chasers from out of state. Your local advantage is provable permanence — real local reviews, a real address history, real crews. Lead with it, because homeowners have been warned about the alternative.

Surge three: hurricane season

Shape: June 1 to November 30. Multi-day pre-storm ramp, weeks-long post-storm plateau.

Gulf coast metros see preparation calls as a storm approaches, then a sustained surge across roofing, water mitigation, electrical, tree work, and fencing that runs for weeks rather than hours.

What is different: duration, not peak. A hailstorm is a bad afternoon. A hurricane is six weeks of doubled volume, which grinds down people in a way a single spike does not. Error rates and attrition climb in week three.

Build in May:

- Sustained capacity that does not depend on how many people are awake

- Two distinct message sets (pre-storm preparation, and post-storm damage) because they are completely different conversations

- Waitlist logic, because you will be booked out and need to capture rather than decline

- Communication templates for power and access constraints affecting scheduling

- A realistic internal plan for week three, when your team is exhausted

The thing most businesses get wrong: going dark on marketing during recovery because you are already overwhelmed. The work being awarded in week four goes to companies still visible. Capture and schedule out rather than disappearing.

What all three share

The preset must exist before the event. There is no time to build one during it. Businesses that try get a poor configuration and conclude the approach does not work.

Honesty about lead time outperforms optimism. A customer told "two weeks, and here is your confirmed date" converts and stays. A customer promised Tuesday and rescheduled twice leaves a review about it.

Capacity, not cleverness, is the constraint. The differentiator during a surge is whether you respond, not what your ad copy says.

What to measure after each event

Three numbers: total inbound during the surge window, percentage responded to within your target, and percentage of responses that became booked work.

The third is the one that tells you whether your triage and lead-time messaging were right. A high response rate with a low booking rate usually means you responded to everything and qualified nothing useful, normally a lead-time honesty problem or a geography problem.

Write those numbers down after every event. The businesses that dominate Texas storm markets are not lucky. They are running their fourth iteration of a plan while their competitors are improvising their first.
